"I always sit up in my chair when I hear someone who has an individual quality. I like the way it gives a new slant on a very old song. She is very much singing it in her own way."

"Ruby's appearances at Wakefield Jazz have been very well received and characterised by a rapid rise in professionalism. Her sparkling personality and winning good looks create a rapport with an audience. Then her relaxed and pitch-perfect delivery of a variety of material from blues to ballads with standards old and modern provides an entertaining attention-holding evening."
Chris de Saram

"Ruby has one of the most exciting new jazz voices around at the moment. Ruby played one of her first gigs here and generated such a buzz around the club I had to get her back almost immediately to answer demand. Definitely a name for the future"

the story so far...

I was born in 1986 in West Yorkshire where I'm still based. Born to jazz loving parents, my name came from the Thelonious Monk classic Ruby, my Dear. I was exposed to a wide variety of different musical styles from an early age which I am very thankful for and was first inspired to sing jazz after seeing the Chicago blues diva, Angela Brown. From then I started my quest to find out about and learn from more interesting and inspiring musicians. I was influenced by Aretha, Ella and Sassy as well as working with UK jazz vocalists Tina May and Lee Gibson on jazz summer schools.

My love of music goes back much further to when I took up the steel pan aged 7. I joined one of Europe's oldest steel bands, North Stars Steel Orchestra from Huddersfield, which has given me a great number of opportunities to play steel pan in the Trinidad and Notting Hill Carnivals as well as a UK tour with jazz trombonist Dennis Rollins, taking in sellouts at Brecon and Cheltenham Jazz Festivals. Some people may not see playing steel pan as being a conventional musical education but I have so much to thank it for! It's given me a great musical ear, good timing, culture and a strong insight into the foundations of music and the music industry that surrounds me.

I love music and will always be hungry to learn from all styles of music from all cultures. I am very lucky to live in a multi-cultural town like Huddersfield and be close to cities with great music scenes such as Leeds and Manchester. My future aims are to learn the guitar and work on writing more of my own songs. I am still very young and wide eyed and hope to meet other like minded musicians to work with.

I graduated from the Jazz BA at Leeds College of Music in July 2008 after studying singing under Louise Gibbs and Kari Bleivik.
